Day boats in Killaloe

A lake boat is the easiest way to see Brian Boru’s Fort from the water, as the ringfort sits on the shore about 2 km north of town.

A 7-night Lough Derg route from Portumna
This is a relaxed round trip, based on the harbours Emerald Star recommends. Plan on two to four hours of cruising a day, which is what experienced Shannon boaters suggest.
Night 1: Portumna. Collect the boat in the afternoon, do your handover and stay in the harbour. Portumna Castle and Gardens and the Irish Workhouse Centre are both a short walk from the moorings.
Night 2: Terryglass. A short first cruise across the top of the lake to a small village with two good pubs.
Night 3: Dromineer. Down the eastern shore to a sailing harbour with a ruined tower house beside the quay.
Night 4: Garrykennedy. A tiny harbour with a castle ruin and a traditional pub.

Night 7: back to Portumna. Moor at Portumna Forest Park harbour on the way in for a final walk on the woodland trails, then return the boat by 9am the next morning.
Things to know before you book
- Lough Derg is big water. In strong winds it gets choppy, especially on the open middle stretch. Stay in the marked channel, check the forecast every morning and wait in harbour if the base advises it.
- Portumna swing bridge opens to boat traffic only at set times. Ask for the current timetable at handover and plan around it.
- Check what the price includes. Fuel, damage waivers, bike hire, extra dinghies and pet fees are often charged on top of the headline price.
- Book early for July and August. Larger boats for families go first, and the Féile Brian Ború festival in Killaloe fills the town’s harbour in early July.
Getting to Portumna
Portumna is about 1 hour 20 minutes by car from Shannon Airport and just over 2 hours from Dublin Airport. Emerald Star can arrange transfers, but hiring a car gives you freedom before and after the cruise.
